Basic Sleep Knowledge: What is sleep?

Updated: Aug 20, 2022

I'm about explain how sleep really works and hopefully with the knowledge i provide you can find peace while you rest. Have you ever stood up too fast and felt that dizzy feeling? That happens because there is change in blood pressure. The same thing occurs as you begin to fall asleep except the body gradually decreases its pressure and the brain drifts off into a detached state. The end of sleep occurs when the body’s temperature and blood pressure begin to rise to prepare for the daytime. On the surface level sleep is a simple process but as i am about to demonstrate it becomes more complex the deeper you go.

Sleep is the process by which the body removes waste and maintains repairs within body while in an altered state of consciousness and mobility. The altered state is and important part of the process because it allows blood pressure changes to occur uninterrupted so cleaning/repairing can occur. Your body produces waste and it has many ways of getting rid of that waste but your brain only has one way, REM. so if your REM stage is compromised your brain can be swimming in its own waste, giving credence to feeling “pooped”.

As sleep begins your blood pressure lowers and causes the individual to drift into a relaxing meditative state. The first state of sleep is known as non-REM stage and is primarily used to release HGH and other hormones that promote tissue repair. For the second portion of sleep known as REM the arterial blood pressure increases which causes spinal fluid to pulse into the brain and remove waste products that build up from the brains’ daily activities. Hopefully this basic explanation of sleep can help relieve some anxiety about what occurs when your eyes close at night.
